Need help paying for aged care? Financial hardship assistance is expanding from November

Good news for older Australians: the Federal Government has confirmed financial hardship support will be available under the new Support at Home program, starting 1 November 2025.
This means if you or your loved one are struggling to afford aged care fees at home or in residential care, you may be eligible for help.
What’s changing?
If you started receiving a Home Care Package before 1 July 2014, you may have missed out on financial hardship support. That’s now set to change.
From 1 November, when Support at Home replaces Home Care Packages, anyone struggling to pay their care fees can apply for hardship assistance through Services Australia.
You could get help with:
· Basic daily care fees
· Income-tested fees
· Independence and everyday living services
And if you already have a hardship approval, it will continue under the new program until the expiry date listed in your approval letter.
Already receiving home care?
If you're on a Home Care Package from 1 July 2014 onwards, you might already be eligible for help with your care fees. That support will continue under Support at Home, but make sure to:
· Check the expiry date on your approval letter
· Reapply before it runs out to avoid gaps in support
· Need a copy of your letter? Call Services Australia on 1800 227 475.
What if I’m applying for support?
If you’re applying for financial hardship assistance, you won’t be asked to pay fees while your application is being assessed. However, keep in mind that any outstanding fees may still apply once your application is reviewed.
What about residential aged care?
If your loved one is moving into a residential aged care home before 31 October 2025, they may be eligible for help with:
· The basic daily fee
· Means-tested care fees
· Accommodation costs
From 1 November, under the new Aged Care Act, hardship assistance will also cover:
· The hotelling contribution
· Non-clinical care contribution
· Ongoing accommodation costs
If your loved one is accessing residential respite care, help with the basic daily fee may also be available.
